Steve, you are the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to electronics. I have a few questions to ask you after my friend warn me about what had happened to his brother while traveling:
His brother needed to make a quick stop at a rest area by the freeway. He activated the alarm and left his car. He was away for less than 5 minutes. When he came back to his car, he noticed that his car alarm was not armed and his cell phone, laptop, GPS and briefcase were gone. He called the police. Police came but found no signs of his car being broken into. He was told that thieves are now using a device to read the security code when you lock your car with your remote switch. Thieves know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or washroom and have a few minutes to steal and run. He was advised to manually lock his car so that no one can steal the code again. Question: Is it that easy to read the code over the airwaves? Are the car codes all scrambled? Do you know how to change the code? Do you know of any tricks to make it harder to copy the code over the airwaves?
I know most people lock and unlock their cars with their remotes. I want to continue having the convenience of using the remote. Now I am not so sure. Thanks for your answers in advance. Joseph

Joseph,

Sounds like this post:

I know it is very possible & rather easy to buy these devices even on E-Bay.
I've heard of this happening to friends I know.

Some alarms now a days use an encrypted code.
Those are a little harder to steal.

Just do some googleing and you'll see what I mean...

Totally possible with an older car alarm. Much more difficult with a newer one that uses a rolling code technique. Same with garage doors etc.

If they use a rolling code then you'd need to unlock and lock multiple times for them to figure out the rolling sequence.
Anyway, I have no worries that someone will decode my VW remote. I am sure in 99% of these cases its simply because people forgot to lock the doors/arm the alarm.
